Raleigh now lived with Julie. It was possibly temporary, but currently Julie needed him there. She needed the presence of someone else in her suite and Raleigh's was a calming one after her minor freak out upon discovering she was still blind.
He couldn't be there all the time, though. He had to work and sometimes, Julie had others in her apartment Ellie. Elizabeth. Miles.
She had been left to her own devices for a bit because people had stuff to do and sometimes it was just overwhelming to her, as much as she enjoyed having people there, to have so many people fuss over her.
Not that she'd force anyone out. She was polite about telling people she just needed some space or to take a nap and that she'd be fine and Raleigh would be home soon.
But she wasn't napping this time. Jack had found her a mess of beads, all in their separate boxes, and several packs of string and now Julie sat at her coffee table in the living room, her back against the front of the couch as she carefully rolled beads of different size and shape and texture between her fingers.
When she heard the front door open, she paused, tilting her head a bit to listen to the foot falls in her hall.
Raleigh hung his hard hat on the wall, twisting it in his fingers before he ran a hand through his hair, "..How'd the hell did you..."
He smiles at her - glad she can't see his smile is slightly pained.
"...You're a good guesser." He doesn't hesitate to kiss the top of her head. He's been doing that a lot. Panicking, just to make sure she's still there, "...Better then me."
Julie grins when he replies, glad she could recognize his footsteps. It was comforting because it meant she was learning. Adapting. Every little thing she got used to, every new skill she acquired, meant she would be fine.
"I'm psychic." She grins when he kisses her, one arm wrapping around his waist. He didn't have plans to go anywhere just yet, did he?
"Actually, I just pay attention more." She didn't want to say she was sure it was just her other senses picking up the slack.
She can hear that smile, a grin on her face in return. Her smile falters a bit at his question, though, an uneasy sigh escaping her lips before she shakes her head a bit.
"No. Same shit, different day." She shrugs, trying to be positive. It's getting difficult but she can do this, right?
"Yeah. Waiting it out sounds like a fucking party." Now it's her turn to lean a little bit into him and tilt her head a bit for a soft, brief kiss. He was steadying just by being there, so him saying he's moving in gets a smile. A small one, sadly, but it's there and the calm emotion and subtle relaxation behind it is very real.
Her arms both move around his shoulders
"I appreciate that, Raleigh. I really mean that. Thank you. You keep me from flipping out entirely."
She won't hit him. It's not in her to do. Neither is showing frailty or feelings of helplessness but she knows she needs to. Some deep down part of her knows it's okay to show how broken she feels. She continues holding him, one hand moving to run through his hair.
"I'm afraid, Raleigh. I'm afraid this is permanent. Forever. I'm afraid this won't right itself ever and what's worse is there's a small part of me that's given up hoping that I'll wake up fine one day." Her voice is steady at first, a quiver at the end creeping in despite her efforts to keep it out.
He doesn't say anything. His first instinct is a sarcastic remark. Trying to make light of the situation but he doesn't. Instead his arms wrap more tightly around her.
A sarcastic remark at the moment would have not gone over all that well. She'd understand why he did it, but she's not in the mood to make light of a situation that really does scare the hell out of her. Oh, sure. She can act all big and tough and pretend this isn't getting to her for the sake of the people around her.
But she can't fake it around Raleigh. Not if she wants whatever this is to work out. She just buries herself in his arms for a bit, eyes closed tightly. Her head rests against his shoulder and her fingers have closed tightly in his shirt.
She may not let go for a while.
"If I sound ungrateful with what I'm going to say, don't take it that way. I don't mean to sound ungrateful for anything at all. I love the help I'm getting. But I'm not used to it. No one's said anything, but I feel like maybe I'm a burden? Just a little bit. Like I'm inconveniencing people. Is that stupid?"
She'll be fine if he thinks it's stupid. It won't offend her at all.
Julie's day had been nothing short of epic. There had been a snowball fight and while she couldn't see a damn thing that was going on, she got a few good hits in with help from friends and on her own. Of course, not being able to see what was going on meant she'd gotten hit a few times as well and when she and Naga finally got home, Jule was cold.
First order of business, a hot shower. She wasn't sure what time it was when she finally got in the door and sent Naga away. It wasn't that late in the afternoon, but she wasn't sure if Raleigh was home or not.
She didn't hear him but she still kept her shower quick.
She was almost entirely thawed out when she finally got out of the water, wrapping her towel around herself and heading to her and Raleighs room to get dressed.
Getting dressed didn't happen, however. What Jules ended up doing was sitting down on her side of the bed, and then stretching out under one of the blankets for a minute, just a minute it was only going to be a minute.
But a minute later, she was asleep and she didn't hear Raleigh when he finally got home.
There's a warm running water sound, steam rising from the bathroom before there's a rumble in the walls. It may be cheap but he's bought a central heating system, so the place is surprisingly snug.
When he spots her beneath the blankets he slides in beside her to kiss her cheek.
Her arm slides around his shoulder, holding him close. She's fine with hunkering down. Julie wore herself out at the snowball fight.
"I'm fine. There was a snowball fight today." There's a slightly smug tone to her voice. "I actually managed to hit people with snowballs. It was so fun."
Julie kisses the top of Raleigh's head, pulling the blanket more around the both of them.
Julie's fingers trail through his hair for a moment before traveling down his neck and across his shoulders. She could stay like this all day, forget her responsibilities on the Turtle. She smiles a bit when he calls her cute, laughing some.
"Wish you could have been there. It got pretty insane at one point. Naga is a great dog, but not the best thing to hide behind. She kept wanting to play, too."
There's no reply from Julie. She's too content and relaxed to say anything. She has Raleigh with her and that's all she wants or needs at the moment. He's warm. He's caring. She's happiest when it's just the two of them like it is at the moment.
Even without her sight, she can find his lips easily and she does so. A soft, slow press of her lips against his, her arms erasing around his shoulders. This was a good way to relax after a long day.

She grins, tucking herself into his arms. This was a good place to be, in bed with him. She was happiest here, especially in his arms. Even if she was only wearing a towel.
"I did. There were layers." She knows what she's doing, Raleigh. "But I'm used of the cold in Seattle. If it gets as cold as it does in Alaska, I may need your help."
"I think I have that one covered," Julie replies with a grin. She has her head resting against his neck by this point, eyes closed. She's nowhere near sleepy, just enjoying the moment. "There is honestly no one else on this turtle that I want to stay warm with."
She shifts slightly, getting more settled before speaking again. "What's the next lesson?"
"I don't even know if we have any in the kitchen." She really hasn't bothered with alcohol since losing her eyesight. It sounded potentially hazardous. However, if she kept her drinking light and stayed with Raleigh, she'd be okay. Right?
He kisses the top of her head, trailing his arms across her shoulder before he abandons the bed and returns - shrugging out of his pants into his boxers, "...Just a bottle of something local."
"Is it just me or is the local stuff really strong ?"
Not that she minds at all. "You're going to need to explain how loads of alcohol will keep us warm." She's just playing along at this point. Julie props herself up some, one hand curled against her chest, the towel held in place.
"I was always told drinking too much ran the risk of making the cold worse."
"There's a technical explanation. Something about warming the blood vessels. Some guy survived the Titanic because he was drinking the cooking sherry."
He returns with a pair of glasses, "We have this bottle. And we honestly don't have anything else to do. You've been here longer then me, there's got to be a TV or something."
"I don't have a TV, sadly." Julie wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. She smiles in Raleigh's direction, shifting on the bed to make room for him. "You've moved in with someone boring, I'm afraid."
"A story. Huh." Julie settles against the pillows again, her hand finally relaxing it's hold on her towel. She chews her lower lip, nose wrinkling a bit as she thought this over, trying to think things over. She had one from before the world went to shit. It's her favorite one to tell. No sad endings whatsoever.
"When I was six, my parents and I went camping. It was my moms responsibility to pack the tent. She thought it was dads responsibility. So, it never got packed. We drove five ours to the campground, got checked in, started unpacking. And there were no tents at all. Not mine. Not my parents. Just our sleeping bags, our food. We remembered to pack dads acoustic guitar. No vacation was complete without it."
She grins, reliving the fun.
"But we had no tents. So mom asks for the directions to the nearest camping supply store. It was an hour away. It took us two hours to find it and by the time we did, they were closed. So we drove back and my mom goes 'That's alright. Who wants to sleep in a stupid, gross tent anyway?' Dad gets huffy, starts sniping back. I don't remember why I looked up, probably to roll my eyes or something. I was pissed and tired and just done with like..everything by that point. But, anyway. I look up, and I noticed shooting stars. So I head over to both of them, get them to look up and...everything went quiet for about a minute or so. When it was done, we just got our sleeping bags out of the car and slept under the stars. It was the coolest vacation I'd ever had."
[ooc: i made that up, it's headcanon.]
[It's just a short message. Julie didn't know the Emperor personally, but the news of her death has her distressed. She tries to hide it, but her usually emotive voice is a bit flat.]
Raleigh, the emperor was murdered. Are you coming home soon?
[Maybe he'll be let off early? Maybe businesses are closing for the day and his boss is sending people home?]
[Raleigh is late getting home, between the crowds and the anarchy he's gotten himself a weapon, a long stick of wood. Anything helps and since he doesn't have a gun, a makeshift quarter staff is going to have to do it.]
Julie, I'm sorry. I had to stop and get a few things.
